The Wonder Lab buzzed with creativity and inspiration Saturday evening when Outside the Lens hosted our inaugural Voice Out juried youth media arts exhibition. This year’s theme, “place,” invited young artists to artistically explore what “place” means to them through digital artworks in photography, illustration, and mixed media.
A Night to Remember
More than 225 attendees convened to immerse themselves in youth artistry. The night was filled with excitement and creativity. Our live DJ and a tosticlocos bar by Isa’s set the perfect vibe as guests mingled and explored the incredible works of art. The engaging panel discussion featured local creatives who shared their insights on the importance of place and creating spaces where all feel welcome.
A highlight of the evening was the engaging panel discussion featuring local creatives, including former OTL employee, photographer, and educator Liliana Hueso. Liliana shared her experience of seeking a sense of place and belonging:
“I’m a binational person. I’m also queer woman. So definitely, I’ve felt out of place a lot of times, and many, many, many times from when I was a kiddo up to today…yesterday. The way that I find belonging is just trying to find the connection, and understanding that my uniqueness is needed in the space and the place where I’m at.”

Bold Perspectives from San Diego’ Young Artists
116 youth artists submitted artwork, and their interpretation of the theme spanned the realms of the physical, emotional, cultural, and fantastical. Submissions were scored by a panel of six jurors.
During the awards ceremony, we celebrated the remarkable achievements of young artists. We are grateful for the support and encouragement from the crowd as we collectively recognized the talent, dedication, and unique perspectives of young creatives.

The evening wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our sponsors, whose contributions are a testament to their belief in the power of youth artists.
