K–8 Media Arts Programs
In partnership with schools, school districts, and the community, Outside The Lens provides programming for K-8 students in San Diego.
OTL K–8 media arts programs integrate tools of 21st century communication into diverse learning environments across San Diego County. They prepare students to be fluent communicators in the emerging language of images and digital media art.
Reimagining K-8 Education
Our In-School Programming elevates students’ learning experiences by addressing the gap in arts education.
Outside The Lens Media Educators collaborate with classroom teachers to design projects that seamlessly integrate media arts and technology into core curriculum (Math, Science, Social Sciences, English Language Arts) for grades K-8.
Our participatory, arts-integrated projects enable students to engage with core subject area content and to express their unique stories.
Art Outside the Classroom
Our commitment to cultivating creativity and self-expression extends beyond the school day.
Outside The Lens partners with school districts and community organizations to offer Out-of-School Programming and summer camps in San Diego and across San Diego County.
These enriching programs provide youth with opportunities to explore their passions, develop new skills, and discover the transformative power of media arts.
Transformative Learning
Our teaching artists are trained in trauma-informed and restorative practices, and provide a culturally responsive curriculum aligned with California State Media Arts Standards and Common Core State Standards.
Our innovative program encourages storytelling and teaches students that participation in their community’s future makes a difference.
Key Learning Objectives
- Youth are comfortable to creatively express their stories and perspectives. (Building self confidence, social and emotional abilities, leadership and communication skills)
- Youth are engaged in core curriculum and STEAM learning, through media arts, enhancing their understanding of critical subject matter and connection of self to community (arts integration).
- Youth become critical consumers and creators of everyday media (media literacy).
- Youth gain critical technical skills for creative pathways in career, college, and beyond, using cameras, iPads, XR technology, and other equipment.
Key Learning Objectives
It is our vision that all youth regardless of income, geography, national origin, or identity have the artistic and technological skills to create, share, and celebrate their stories.
