Teen & Transitional Age Youth Programs
In partnership with the community, local organizations, and schools, Outside The Lens provides specialized programming for teens and Transitional Age Youth (TAY) (18-25 years old).
Outside The Lens’ Teen programs emphasize media arts skill development, media literacy, social-emotional development, intergenerational community connections, and civic engagement.
By providing hands-on media arts experiences, our programs aim to cultivate creative pathways for teens and transitional age youth. Outside The Lens recognizes and cultivates the existing creative potential and community-focused drive in teens. We provide opportunities and resources that encourage them to share their voice and contribute to meaningful change within their communities.
In-School Programming
Through partnerships with schools and school districts, our team elevates students’ learning experiences by addressing the gap in arts education.
Outside The Lens Media Educators collaborate with classroom teachers to design projects that seamlessly integrate media arts into core curriculum (Math, Science, Social Sciences, English Language Arts) for high school and college students.
These projects not only deepen students’ understanding of core content but also cultivate valuable media arts skills, fostering a well-rounded educational experience.
Out-of-School Programming
Outside The Lens partners with the community and local organizations to offer programs for teens outside of school hours through workshop series.
OTL Media Educators co-develop projects and programs with teens that reflect topics relevant to their lives.
Teen Media Arts
Designed for San Diego teens, Outside The Len’s Teen Media Arts program provides a supportive environment for students of all abilities and experience levels to explore photography, video, podcasting, design, and other areas of media arts.
By connecting with creative professionals and peers who share their passion, participants develop new skills, tell their stories through various forms of digital media, connect with community members of all ages, and effect positive change within their community.
Leadership Through the Lens
Leadership Through the Lens is a pre-college credit program in partnership with UCSD Extension that provides students with an in-depth consideration of photography as a tool for social justice while addressing the question of how youth leadership can change the world.
Students learn about the history of photography as a tool for social justice and how youth voices and leadership have made a lasting impact on our world. They gain a foundation of leadership theories and social justice photography, developing essential skills they will utilize to create their own plan for a youth-led social change project. Leadership Through the Lens addresses youth leadership, community organizing, life skills development, youth workforce readiness, and mentorship.
