Media Arts Educator

Position Description: Elementary/Teen/TAY Media Arts Educator

Outside the Lens is looking for a passionate and dedicated Elementary/Teen/TAY Media Arts Educator with a strong background in media arts. The ideal candidate should possess experience working with teens or adults in an educational setting. The Elementary/Teen/TAY Media Educator for OTL reports to the Elementary/Teen/TAY Program Manager and collaborates with other Teen/TAY media educators and partners to develop and deliver innovative curriculum to elementary, teens, and TAY youth throughout San Diego County. The Media Educator creates a learning environment centered around Restorative Practices, Trauma Informed Practices, culturally responsive teaching and social-emotional learning.

Roles & Responsibilities

Program Implementation (40%)

  • Implements and communicates with classroom teachers/program partners for input and feedback
  • Incorporates best practices in teaching and learning, utilizing effective instructional techniques.
  • Coordinates and produces final exhibitions and other student presentations.
  • Attends other staff members exhibitions and events.

Program Development (40%)

  • Develops and documents curriculum for students aligned with program goals, outcomes, standards and varying interests and needs of students and community.
  • Keeps up to date with current happenings in Media Arts, attending professional development opportunities and sharing knowledge with the team.
  • Creates projects with corresponding lesson plans and detailed curriculum maps, ensuring alignment with program outcomes, OTL methodology and the OTL JEDI framework.
  • Utilizes and implements OTL assessments for planning and instruction.
  • Develops innovative lessons and projects as part of programming.
  • Meets regularly with teams and co-develops roles and responsibilities within teams.

Program Administration (20%)

  • Manages material and equipment setup
  • Ensures collection of media releases, attendance and other deliverables, as well as organization of student work.
  • Implements each program’s pre and post-evaluation (mid-eval when applicable), ensuring program outcomes are being met.
  • Submits digital deliverables and program data at the culmination of each program.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Degree or experience working in the field with photography, video or film production, graphic design, or other areas of media arts.
  • Experience teaching or working with youth, adults, or educators in a learning environment.
  • Experience working with or an interest in working with teens from a variety of communities.
  • This position may require work outside of business hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • This position requires being on site in the office and the ability to get to various locations in San Diego County.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skilled in leading program development, implementation and administration.
  • Skilled in effective classroom management techniques and strategies.
  • Skilled with best practices in teaching and learning, including curriculum development aligned with program goals.
  • Ability to coordinate final exhibitions, build sustainable partnerships, and support program promotion.
  • Skilled in aligning to curriculum standards and program outcomes.
  • Ability to lead team meetings, co-develop roles and responsibilities, and foster a collaborative work environment.

Pay: $24.00 – $28.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 20 per week
