Creamos imágenes que representan lo que somos y escribimos poemas sobre nuestro pasado. Conocimos a personas con problemas de salud que nos enseñaron sobre la resistencia, la perseverancia y la alegría de vivir. Exploramos Tijuana, una ciudad llena de colores, sabores y olores. Conocimos el arte local, paseamos por las calles y capturamos imágenes siempre intrigantes y, en algunos casos, nuevas e innovadoras. Después de nuestro viaje, tuvimos una exposición final en la que hablamos de nuestro trabajo y de por qué es importante seguir creando imágenes que representen lo que somos.

Hay una sensación estimulante cuando se viaja a un lugar nuevo: sonreír a una cara desconocida, saborear la cocina local, tocar la hierba con los pies descalzos, tocar un ritmo nuevo. Yo lo describiría como una vulnerabilidad inmediata ante lo desconocido, cogidos de la mano con la emoción de la exploración. He sido increíblemente afortunada de haber tenido esta sensación muchas veces, y no quiero que se acabe nunca.

We’re only driving 35 miles, but the distance feels further. Julia, an immersion trip coordinator for USD’s service learning program, dashes us through the freeway lanes and swifty carries us in her small car across the Otay Border. We drive east towards Tecate, far from downtown Tijuana, far from the housing developments, down a long hill to land at a lightly maintained road leading us up to Albergue las Memorias - a center for those living with HIV/AIDS, addictions, and their family members.

Cine en Sherman a comenzado!

The inaugural screening of the film series Cine en Sherman took place last month at Sherman Heights Community Center. The featured film of the evening was Tony-The Movie, a portrait of homelessness in San Diego as seen through the eyes of the film’s star, Tony. The filmmaker, Dennis Stein, follows Tony as he navigates his housing options and searches for solutions to homelessness, not just as it affects him, but as it affects thousands across the county.

As an additional feature of this year’s event, and for the first time ever, Outside The Lens will be awarding the Focus Award for Community Leadership to Ivy Gordon.
